Although the Central African Republic's climate doesn't provide ideal conditions for enjoying or storing chocolate because of searing temperatures, some areas of the country are favorable to cocoa cultivation. Admittedly, cocoa is not Central African Republic's biggest export; for a long time, the country has preferred to base its agriculture on the production of coffee and cotton. Nevertheless, in the 1960s some trees from Cameroon were introduced to the Haut-Shaba and Shaba areas bordering Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo. Faced with fluctuations in the price of cocoa, those business efforts did not have successful results. Still, some local producers in the south, near Bangassou, are hoping to create a cooperative dedicated to cocoa cultivation by buying seedlings from Cameroon.
