The humid climatic conditions in the areas of Mekong, Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Tre and southeast of the Truong Son Mountains, made it possible to cultivate cocoa in Vietnam from the beginning of the 20th century. Cocoa cultivation has always been supported by national agricultural development policies. American occupiers even helped small cocoa producers both strategically and financially to improve their yields. Nevertheless, the rapid growth didn't really begin until the turn of the millennium.
The Trinitario, a cocoa bean variety
Despite its efforts and its 49,431 of cocoa trees planted, Vietnam still remains behind its neighbors Indonesia and Malaysia. All the same, in 2013 its annual production reached 5,000 tons of cocoa beans. The Ministry of Agriculture and Development hopes to quintuple its production by creating a program to plant 123,550 acres of cocoa trees from now until 2020. The Mekong Delta is the main producing region, where growers come from small family farms that practice polyculture. The main variety of cocoa bean found in Vietnam is the Trinitario, far ahead of the Amelonado and Forastero varieties. Note that the internal consumption market still remains low due to the price of chocolate and especially food consumption habits.
