Faced with the cocoa-producing juggernauts of the Ivory Coast and Ghana, Togo is relying on a niche market. Organic farming of cocoa beans has been developing for the last couple of years, with an annual production reaching 6,000 tons. Togolese cocoa is recognized by artisanal chocolatiers as high-quality thanks to the certification it has received. The NGO Agronomes et vétérinaires Sans Frontières supports 900 producers invested in this industry, united within twenty cooperatives in the Kougnohou region, center of the Akebou province.
