Portugal’s level of chocolate consumption is one of the lowest in Europe. In 2008, according to a study conducted by BCIA and Euromonitor, this annual consumption amounted to 1.6 kg per capita. By comparison, you should know that Great Britain is in the lead with 11.7 kg per capita (Note that these figures do not include chocolate bars, cocoa powder or spreads). However, this does not mean that the Portuguese do not like chocolate. The proof is the various cultural events organised around the product.
International Chocolate Festival in Obidos
In Sagres, in the extreme southern part of the country, beer and chocolate are two products with close ties. In Portimao, an Algarve seaside resort located just 50 km from Sagres, the local market offers a whole week dedicated to chocolate, including rating the area’s catering schools on demonstrations and tastings. The Portuguese love affair with chocolate is reflected especially by the International Chocolate Festival in Obidos, a town located 80 km north of the capital, Lisbon. This little medieval town is the stage for activities centred on chocolate for a dozen days at the end of March and the beginning of April. On the schedule : a chocolate house for children, a cooking lesson for adults, and contests for professionals, such as the election for Chocolatier of the Year and the International Chocolate Recipes Contest. The chocolate paradise attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year !
