Ivory Coast: the top cocoa-producing country
In 2013, Ivory Coast provided 36% of the world's cocoa, a volume of 1.74 million tons, which made it the largest cocoa-producing country on the planet. The history of this production begins at the turn of the 20th century before it really took off up during the 1960s following the country's independence from France. The governments have chosen to emphasize the primary sector in order to develop the national economy. In 1970, production tripled, reaching 315,000 tons. In 1990, it was 725,000 tons before reaching the current numbers during the 2000s. Policies in the economic sector coupled with particularly favorable meteorological conditions made it possible to achieve these unprecedented results.
Ivory Coast: a future major center de transformation for cocoa beans?
Today, the leading role in cocoa processing goes to The Netherlands, but Ivory Coast has decided to develop its own activities in the area. That means having de better yields at the national level since only 6% of the price of chocolate bar goes to local producers. Major worldwide actors in the chocolate agri-foods industry have already built factories for the purpose. These Ivorian producers are interested in exporting only cocoa paste, not raw beans. Afreximbank has chosen to support the Ivorian state in this project with a sum of 750 million dollars. Finally, it's worth noting that Ivory Coast gains 15% of its national wealth from cocoa experts.
