Sierra Leone, a cocoa-producing country

Sierra Leone is a small country in West Africa located between Guinea and Liberia and on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The country is most famous for its immense diamond resources, which attract various interests and are the cause of numerous conflicts. Despite that, two thirds of the labor force is involved in agriculture. Among the country's exports are coffee, palm kernels, kola nuts, spices and cocoa. Cocoa cultivation has primarily developed in the the Kenema and Kailahun regions, in the western provinces and in the Pujehun area in the southern province. This cultivation mostly involves small agricultural plots measuring between 0.9 and 30 acres. In 1999, national production reached 11,000 tons. The variety cultivated is the Forastero Amelonados variety, which originated in the Amazon. The principal destinations for Sierra Leone's cocoa exports are China, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

Zoom in on the Kpeya Agricultural Enterprise cooperative

Founded in 1996, cooperative is located Kenema, around 185 miles from the capital of Freetown. It includes more than 1200 members and is divided into 50 village committees. The cooperative has received support from the Food and Agriculture Organzation of the United Nations, the TWIN organization, which promotes fair tead and the German agency Agro Action. Its various actions are oriented toward training and the marketing of high-quality cocoa, taking into account the multiethnic base of the farmers. By mastering the techniques of fermentation and drying, cocoa from Sierra Leone is able to benefit from premiums related to the fair trade charter. With the new income, the cooperative has invested in renovating its warehouses, building new offices, a store and a school.
