Chocolate in Mexico: quite a history!
Mexico is evidently a key player in chocolate consumption all over the world. In fact, the history of cocao beans has a direct link to that of Mexico itself, as it was the pre-Columbian peoples of the Maya and Aztec tribes who created the first chocolate beverages. These recipes were later brought back to Europe by the conquistadors, with cocoa becoming the third most exchanged food product worldwide today.
A market awaiting development
While Mexico is an economic center for the farming of cocoa beans, the annual consumption per person is only 400 grams, compared to, for example 2 kg for the Brazilians. Production of cocoa and chocolate makes up only 1% of world production, which is principally carried out in the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero. International brands particularly dominate the domestic market.
White chocolate beverages
In Mexico, chocolate consumption remains focused on beverages, especially for breakfast. White chocolateis particularly preferred by Mexicans compared to other types, with 11% of consumption being white chocolate. So why not give a box of sugar-free white chocolates made with maltitol made from 100% natural grains? For delivery of chocolate to Mexico and all over the world, think of Planète Chocolat!
